Punta Gorda, Fla. -- Group Five Commander, Lt. Col. Fran Gleockler, stressed the importance of all Civil Air Patrol (CAP) members completing the online training that has been released recently. “it’s not going away” she said “in fact its very close to being required for all members.”
Speaking at the recent Group Five Commander’s Call in Charlotte County, the colonel was referring to the Operational Risk Management (ORM) courses, Equal Opportunity (EO) training, Aircraft Ground Handling training, and Basic Safety course. “These are free, educational, and worthwhile. Most can be completed with a few minutes of time.” Most of the training will automatically post to the member's personnel records upon completion.
CAP National Headquarters has been following the trend adopted by the military, government agencies, and the private sector of moving personnel training to an online delivery system. Many CAP courses have been, or are in the process of being updated, at which time they are released to be completed using Internet technology. This is the future of training and units must make certain there is support for the members who may not have developed a high comfort level using the technology.
Commander Gleockler commented that the cadets are way ahead of the senior members in meeting the requirements for taking the ORM course. This is due to the last minute requirement that cadets needed to have completed the training prior to attending this summer’s special activities.
The Equal Opportunity training has been added to the Level 1 training material. The approach has been similar to that used with OPSEC training. Now all new members completed it when they join, but existing members are expected to go back and complete the training. The difference was with OPSEC they started pulling the ratings on members who did not complete the required training. Unit Commanders are required by regulation to address the EO subject on an annual basis.
Commander Gleockler recommended that members complete the training now because there will certainly be additional training coming in the future. Her advice was that it would be better to stay ahead rather than have a member get behind and forced to play catch up by completing a mountain of training. “Group Five continues set the example in so many areas” said Gleockler “we need to insure that we lead the way with compliance in regards to the required training. I have confidence our members are professional enough that this can be done without a lot of nagging”
