| Group 5 Cadet Receives Flight Training Scholarship |

Sarasota, Fla. -- On August 24, 2009, Cadet CMSgt Timothy Downs, a member of the SRQ Composite Squadron, was presented with a $1,000 scholarship to use toward flying lessons. He earned this award by achieving the highest score on his final exam during the Group 5 Aviation Ground School held for a week in June at Sarasota Military Academy. Cadet Downs also received a promotions to CMSgt. On hand to recognize the achievement and present the awards were Florida Wing Commander Col. Chris Moersch, Wing Director of Operations Lt. Col. Brent Cox, Group 5 Commander Lt. Col. Fran Gleockler, SRQ Squadron Commander Col. Pat O’Key along with numerous senior members and fellow cadets.

Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit organization with 57,000 members nationwide. CAP performs 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and was credited by the AFRCC with saving 90 lives in fiscal year 2008. Its volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and counter-drug missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. The members play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to the more than 22,000 young people currently participating in CAP cadet programs.
